Natural coordinate systems are used by isoparametric elements such that any element with a coordinate configuration in the X, Y, and Z global coordinates can be represented by the same element in the natural coordinate system. This allows for elements to be formulated independent of their actual geometry. The Jacobian is used to convert between the two coordinate systems.
